A practical guide to turning on Magnifier, changing zoom settings, switching between Full screen, Lens, and Docked views, using keyboard shortcuts, and fixing common Magnifier problems.
Windows Magnifier is a built-in accessibility feature that enlarges text, icons, menus, windows, and other items on the screen. It is useful when text is too small, when you need to inspect interface details, or when you prefer temporary zoom without changing the whole display scale.
Unlike browser zoom, Magnifier works across the entire operating system. It can enlarge the desktop, File Explorer, Settings, apps, dialog boxes, installers, and system menus.
| Tool | Best for | Where it works |
|---|---|---|
| Magnifier | Temporary zoom, accessibility, close inspection | Entire Windows desktop |
| Display scale | Permanent interface enlargement | System-wide layout and app UI |
| Browser zoom | Web pages only | Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and other browsers |
| Text size | Larger system text without changing everything | Supported Windows interface text |
The fastest way to open Magnifier is to use the built-in keyboard shortcut. This works in both Windows 10 and Windows 11.
After Magnifier opens, press the same shortcut again to zoom in further. To zoom out, use:
To close Magnifier completely, press:
The Settings app gives you access to Magnifier options such as zoom level, zoom increment, view mode, color inversion, edge smoothing, reading shortcut, and automatic startup.
Win + I to open Settings.Win + I to open Settings.Win + Ctrl + M to open Magnifier settings directly.
Magnifier has three main view modes. The best choice depends on whether you want the entire screen enlarged or only a selected area.
Enlarges the entire desktop. This is the most comfortable mode for continuous reading and general work.
Creates a movable magnifying lens around the pointer. Useful for inspecting small areas without zooming the whole desktop.
Shows a magnified strip at the top of the screen while the rest of the desktop remains at normal size.
To switch between Magnifier views, use:
| View | Shortcut | Recommended use |
|---|---|---|
| Full Screen | Ctrl + Alt + F |

| Lens | Ctrl + Alt + L |
Checking small UI elements and icons |
| Docked | Ctrl + Alt + D |

By default, Magnifier usually increases or decreases zoom in fixed steps. You can change the current zoom level and the size of each zoom step in Settings.
Win + Plus (+).Win + Plus (+) to zoom in.Win + Minus (-) to zoom out.Ctrl + Alt + Spacebar to quickly preview the whole desktop.
Magnifier can also read text aloud. This feature is useful when text is small, when you want to reduce eye strain, or when you need basic text-to-speech without opening a separate screen reader.

|---|---|
| Start, pause, or resume reading | Modifier key + Enter |
| Read from mouse pointer | Modifier key + Left mouse click |

If you rely on Magnifier every day, you can make Windows start it automatically. This is better than opening it manually after each restart.
Keyboard shortcuts make Magnifier much easier to control. The following shortcuts are the most useful for everyday work.

If Magnifier does not open, closes immediately, or behaves incorrectly, use the following checks.
Win + R.magnify.If Magnifier opens from the Run dialog, the problem may be with a shortcut, keyboard layout, or hotkey conflict rather than Magnifier itself.
Open Magnifier settings and confirm that Magnifier is not configured in a way that makes it difficult to see. For example, an unsuitable view mode or very high zoom level can make the desktop feel unusable.

You can also change the zoom level from Magnifier settings. For occasional use, the fastest method is Win + Plus (+) to open Magnifier and Win + Esc to close it. Full screen is best for continuous reading, Lens is best for inspecting small details, and Docked is useful when you want a magnified strip while keeping the rest of the desktop at normal size.
Most users should learn three shortcuts first: Win + Plus to open and zoom in, Win + Minus to zoom out, and Win + Esc to close Magnifier.
